How to report a car accident in Queensland

Being involved in a car accident can be a highly stressful moment for most people. In the heat of the moment, there are certain steps that must be completed at the scene of the accident and it’s easy to forget to do so.

Number one, if anyone is injured or appears to be, call Triple 0 – 000 for emergency assistance. Try and remain calm and stay still or render assistance to other persons if safe to do so.

It is a legal requirement to report an accident to Police if someone is injured or killed, drugs and/or alcohol are involved, a driver refuses to supply particulars. Leaves the scene and if a vehicle requires towing.

It’s also important to and a legal requirement to exchange particulars between drivers. This includes license information, car registration plate number and contact details. This will be used when you make an insurance claim and in reporting the incident to Police. Penalties apply if this is not done.

In addition, these details will be required if you make a CTP claim for personal injury.

How do I report an accident to Police?

There are several ways to report an accident to the Police. In Queensland you can use the following methods:

  • Call Policelink on 131 444.
  • Use the PoliceLink app on iPhone and Android phones.
  • Complete the online form with QPS here. Provide any photos or video you may have here.
  • Alternatively, you can visit your local Police Station and speak with an Officer to report the accident.

This should be reported within 24 hours of the accident.

How do I make a claim for personal injury?

How do I make a car insurance claim?
